B&B Italia sofa in library with book cases designed by Tom Helme ***** Having bought a little old paint company established in the 1940's called?Farrow and Ball?and turned it into a global sensation which changed the world of interior design colour, Tom Helme established the?Fermoie?fabric company, printed linens and cottons all made in the Wiltshire town of Marlborough. ?These are fabrics that succeed in creating the look and feel of old woven textiles using pigments that produce a rare depth of colour and light. Tom lives in Scotland in a manor house. Although run-down the house was not as ancient as it seemed - the foundation stone above the front door showing a date of 1905. What saved it from ruin was a good Edwardian slate roof and exceptionally well made teak windows which had resisted 100 years of Scottish coastal weather. Of course with Tom's experience, including advising the National Trust on decoration, the house had found a rare saviour who would tackle both inside and out in a sensitive and assured manner. The ground floor houses and impressive broad hall and elegant staircase, 3 large receptions rooms one leading to the other and plenty of interesting utility rooms, boot-rooms, pantry's and a kitchen that remind one of Downton Abbey while there? are 9 bedrooms and some of the most interesting period bathrooms of any house. Only the gunroom had any heating and that has been rectified by laying ground source heating in 5,000 meters of trenches in a nearby field making the heating bills shrink to almost nothing. Naturally Tom has used Fermoie fabrics throughout to great effect; its almost as if the house was designed to showcase the subtle prints and many soft country colours. The gardens have been restored by Kirsty Knight-Bruce who was born locally. Shore cottage below the house beside the beach has also been restored and is now a heavenly guest house for friends who want a true Scottish experience.?
