In previous years, the 84-year-old pontiff has taken on the key role in the heavy liturgical program in St Peter's Basilica, starting fr om Palm Sunday and ending on Easter Sunday in 2005. But four weeks after thr oat surgery to ease breathing difficulties, Vatican sources said he is not e xpected to participate in this year's ceremonies.
